WASHINGTON, D.C. — Senator Mike Lee is taking center stage in the U.S. Senate as he leads the charge to pass the SAVE America Act, a key piece of legislation aimed at strengthening election integrity nationwide.
The Utah Republican has become one of the most vocal advocates for the bill, which would require proof of U.S. citizenship to register to vote in federal elections and establish stricter voter verification standards. The measure, already passed by the House, now faces a critical test in the Senate, where Lee and his allies are working to build momentum despite expected opposition.
Speaking on the Senate floor, Lee framed the SAVE America Act as a necessary reform to restore trust in the nation’s electoral system. “The right to vote is sacred,” Lee said. “And it must be protected by ensuring that only American citizens are participating in American elections.”
Lee has also emphasized that the legislation is rooted in what he describes as common-sense safeguards. “This isn’t about restricting voting—it’s about protecting it,” he said. “Requiring proof of citizenship is a reasonable, widely supported step to make sure our elections remain free, fair, and secure.”
The SAVE America Act would require states to verify citizenship status during voter registration and take steps to maintain accurate voter rolls. Supporters argue that the bill would create uniform standards across the country and close potential loopholes that could allow non-citizens to vote in federal elections.
Lee has pushed back on critics who argue the bill could create barriers to voting. “Americans show identification for all kinds of important activities,” he said. “It’s not unreasonable to expect the same when it comes to something as important as voting in a federal election.”
The Utah senator has also taken a leadership role in organizing Senate Republicans around the effort, participating in extended floor debates and public messaging campaigns designed to highlight what he views as vulnerabilities in the current system. His efforts have helped elevate the SAVE America Act into one of the most closely watched legislative battles in Washington.
Despite strong support among Republicans, the bill faces an uphill climb in the Senate, where Democrats are expected to oppose it and procedural hurdles could stall its progress. Still, Lee remains undeterred.
“We owe it to the American people to ensure confidence in our elections,” Lee said. “The SAVE America Act is about preserving that confidence for generations to come.”
As debate continues, Lee’s leadership is ensuring the issue remains front and center, setting up a high-stakes fight over the future of election law in the United States.
