House Freedom Caucus Backs Trump’s Push to Cancel August Recess Over SAVE America Act

Members of the House Freedom Caucus are rallying behind President Trump’s demand that Senate Majority Leader John Thune cancel the chamber’s August recess until the SAVE America Act passes, escalating a fight that has already exposed deep divisions among the Senate majority over Trump’s number one legislative agenda item and the future of the filibuster.

Trump has pushed for weeks to keep the Senate in Washington. “John Thune should not allow the United States Senate to ‘leave town’ until it passes The Save America Act or, far better still, TERMINATES THE FILIBUSTER,” President Trump wrote on Truth Social so the majority “ can then quickly pass everything they ever dreamed of.”

Thune has resisted that pressure, arguing the bill has already failed repeatedly on the floor. “If I thought there was a path to getting a result, I’m all for it,” he told reporters Monday. “We voted on it two, three, four, five times already, had it up on the floor for an extended period of time. Show me how this ends. What’s the picture of victory at the end?”

He added that keeping senators in Washington without a clear legislative outcome carries its own risks. “If we are going to be sitting here in endless quorum calls, I don’t know if that’s in anybody’s best interest,” Thune said.

Tennessee Representative Andy Ogles rejected that reasoning, framing the fight as a test of Senate resolve rather than procedure. “Did we forget that the talking filibuster was essential to passing the Civil Rights Act, the Voting Rights Act, and countless other major pieces of legislation?” he said.

He did not stop there. “If John Thune is unwilling to do the work, he needs to RESIGN,” Ogles said.

Texas Representative Keith Self echoed the demand for the Senate to remain in session, tying the recess directly to the bill’s fate.

“The American people are sick and tired of the Senate’s excuses,” Self said.

“No results? No recess. DO YOUR JOB. PASS THE SAVE AMERICA ACT,” he added.

The SAVE America Act would impose new restrictions on mail-in ballots, require proof of citizenship for voter registration, and mandate photo identification at polling places. It has failed to advance in the Senate amid a filibuster.

Thune has said any decision to cancel the recess would depend on whether the Senate has a realistic path to passing legislation, not simply extending debate. He noted that Trump’s team previously met with roughly twenty Senators to gauge support for eliminating the legislative filibuster and found fifteen opposed.

The calls by members of the Freedom Caucus to support President Trumps push to pass the SAVE Act has added pressure on Thune as the chamber weighs its schedule for the coming weeks. Whether the Senate remains in Washington through August or proceeds with recess as planned is expected to become clearer in the coming days.
