Violent Threats Toward ICE Agents at Newark Protest Draw Condemnation, Renew Debate Over Sanctuary Policies

A protest outside a federal immigration facility in Newark, New Jersey, escalated into violent threats this week as demonstrators shouted explicit death threats at U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement personnel. Video circulating online shows a protester yelling, “I’ll kll your whole ******** family! Your children, your wife, ALL DEAD! I have your FACE, mother******. YOU’RE DEAD. DEAD.”

The incident has prompted renewed scrutiny of New Jersey’s sanctuary‑city policies, which limit cooperation between local police and federal immigration authorities. Critics argue those policies prevented officers from intervening despite the threats being potentially criminal under state and federal law.

Fox News correspondent Bill Melugin said the conduct captured on video appears to violate New Jersey’s terroristic‑threats statute.

Melugin wrote on X, “This is a crime under New Jersey’s terroristic threats law. But due to sanctuary policies, there are no local police there to make an arrest. It also may be a federal crime under 8 USC 115. A line is crossed when you say you will do something, not just say you hope they die.” Melugin has previously reported on how sanctuary‑city restrictions can limit law‑enforcement response during immigration‑related protests.

Florida Representative Randy Fine condemned the threats and said the rhetoric reflects a broader breakdown in enforcement.

“Democrats are chanting ‘shoot yourself in the head’ at ICE agents — all to pander to foreign invaders who don’t give a damn about them. Meanwhile, we are fighting to deport every last one of these invaders and put America first. It’s completely backwards, suicidal, and disgusting.,” Fine posted on social media.

Members of the House Freedom Caucus have pointed to the Newark incident as evidence that sanctuary‑city policies embolden violent behavior toward federal officers. Several lawmakers in the group have supported legislation to restrict federal funding to jurisdictions that limit cooperation with ICE, arguing that such policies undermine public safety and impede immigration enforcement.

Supporters of sanctuary‑city rules have historically argued that limiting cooperation with federal immigration authorities encourages community trust and prevents local police from being drawn into federal civil‑immigration matters. Critics counter that the policies create enforcement gaps that allow threats, criminal activity, or immigration violations to go unaddressed.

The Newark protest occurred amid broader national debate over immigration enforcement and the role of local jurisdictions in assisting federal agencies. ICE officials have not publicly commented on whether the threats will be referred for federal investigation, though legal analysts note that 8 U.S.C. § 115 prohibits threats against federal officers and their families.

Lawmakers who support defunding sanctuary jurisdictions say the Newark incident underscores the need for stronger federal leverage. Members of the House Freedom Caucus have backed proposals tying federal grants to cooperation with ICE, arguing that jurisdictions receiving federal dollars should not be permitted to block enforcement efforts.

In response to the video, Acting Attorney General Todd Blanche promised consequences for the demonstrator allegedly threatening the ICE agent.

“We will find him & we will arrest him,” Blanche told Fox News host Will Cain.
